FLOATING OIL PLATFORM HELD FIRM BY BEXCO BACK-UP LINES MADE WITH DYNEEMA®
March 10, 2011
Ropes made with Dyneema®, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), are being successfully used to secure rigs, mobile offshore drilling units (MODUs), buoyant turret mooring (BTM) systems and similar constructions in the offshore oil and gas industry. Users are finding them invaluable when original equipment steel wire rope (SWR) and chains that secure mooring legs break or suffer damage. The back-up lines made with Dyneema® are installed as a safety feature until regular maintenance can be carried out.
DSM Dyneema, the manufacturer of Dyneema®, cites the example of the Chinese floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO), the NanHai KaiTuo. The vessel operated in the Xijiang Oil Field at the mouth of Pearl River about 130km from Hong Kong in the South China Sea. The oil field is operated by ConocoPhillips and the China National Offshore Oil Corporation, CNOOC.
An inspection of the NanHai KaiTuo by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) found broken wires on two of the SWR mooring legs of its BTM system. SBM Services, a service provider to the offshore industry, was requested by ConocoPhillips to design and supply a back-up system consisting of a special connector to fit a positively buoyant back-up line made with Dyneema®. Installation of this back-up system was required in case of a SWR failure in one of the damaged composite anchor legs.
The back-up system is designed to be capable of retaining the FPSO in position and maintaining production, gaining time for ConocoPhillips to mobilise the required vessels and equipment to replace the broken wire leg, in case one of the wires fails due to its reduced strength.
SBM Services verified that the connector and the back-up line in its new configuration could withstand a load of 580t, the maximum likely in the event of a broken leg.
BEXCO, a Belgium-based rope manufacturer, designed and manufactured the back-up line with Dyneema®. Lines made with Dyneema® were selected in preference to SWR and other synthetic materials because of its high strength and low weight. The 1,000t minimum break load (MBL) line consists of parallel laid cores made with Dyneema® SK78 yarn protected by a polyester cover. It was designed for a minimum of one year under full load. Performance is not affected by sea water, nor does it rot.
For ConocoPhillips, the main reasons for choosing lines made with Dyneema® were its low weight, neutral buoyancy and high durability and strength compared with alternative synthetic materials. Furthermore, the ability to do the installation job quickly played a role in the decision making process. Installation of the back-up lines was carried out by divers, because an ROV would not have been able to get close enough to the wires to perform the action. The buoyancy of the lines meant the divers could do their job in a fast and safe manner.
ConocoPhillips used the lines for 15 months to its complete satisfaction, before the FPSO NanHai KaiTuo was decommissioned during 2010. The lines are now in storage, ready for further use if necessary.

BEXCO AND VIKING MOORINGS APPROVED BY DNV FOR PERFORMING INLINE REPAIR SPLICES ON POLYESTER DEEPROPE®
February 19, 2010
Viking Moorings and BEXCO have developed an Inline Splicing Repair techique, applicable to temporary offshore mooring ropes. The technique was evaluated with respect to durability in service and approved, by DNV. Viking Moorings and BEXCO are owners of the technology.
Inline splicing allows damaged subropes in a polyester DeepRope® to be repaired without the need to cut the rope into two separate sections. Connecting two separate sections would require extra hardware and therefore extra weight. This way, inline splicing also reduces cost and handling time. The splicing can be done both in the factory or offshore on the AHV.

BRAND NEW LENGTH MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR FULL SIZE ROPES
February 18, 2010
In July 2009 BEXCO has installed a brand new length measurement system for full size ropes. With this system in house, BEXCO can offer length measurement with an accuracy of +/-0,3%, at tensions up to 20 tonf. The system is designed to handle any possible diameter of rope.
The system delivered perfect rope lengths for the JUBILEE project, which was finished October 2009. Moreover, there is now evidence that the length control system on the strand production level, used for many years for MODU ropes, is adequate and delivers high accuracy. This means we have perfect control of the lengths during all production steps, from strands to full ropes.

SUCCESSFUL TESTING OF 2400 TONS ROPE MADE WITH DYNEEMA® AT DNV NORWAY
February 18, 2010
BEXCO has succesfully designed and tested an Ultraline® rope made with Dyneema® SK75 of record high breaking strength 2440Tf. Subrope to rope efficiency is still a remarkable 90%. The test was performed at the DNV labs in Bergen and was witnessed by Lloyds.
The test was performed in cooperation with DSM Dyneema. This result will help us in answering to the increasing demand for very high strength and stiffness ropes in offshore and lifting industry. Using the same design and production methodology, Bexco is convinced that it is ready to produce DeepRope® made of Dyneema® over 3000 Tonf MBL.

TWO KILOMETERS OF ADVANCED BEXCO ROPE HELP SECURE 300 MW OF CLEAN POWER
May 5, 2009
The wind farm located at Thorntonbank, 30 km off the coast of Zeebrugge, Belgium, will contain 60 Wind Turbine Generators (WTGS) with a combined capactity of 300 MW of clean power.
Each of the wind towers will be 120 meters high and will be positioned on flask-shaped concrete foundations that weigh 2800 tons each. These foundations will rest on the seabed at a depth of appr. 25 meters. One critical phase of the operation is the positioning and securing of the barge vessels used to handle all the equipment, including lifting cranes. This phase is being handled by Dredging International, a subsidiary of DEME. For this job Dredging International has been working closely together with BEXCO, who manufactured and supplied mooring ropes made with Dyneema® to moor the barge with four anchors to the seabed.

BEXCO’S ADVANCED TORQUE MATCHED ROPE DESIGN SUCCESSFULLY TESTED
April 10, 2009
In an answer to the industries’ need for reducing the fatigue damage to wire rope when used in combination with synthetic mooring lines, BEXCO spent more than 2 years in the development of a unique rope solving this problem.
When combining synthetic mooring lines with wire ropes in one mooring leg, the wire will twist / untwist as a result of the cyclic loading of the mooring leg. This twisting action of the wire rope drastically reduces its lifetime.
To overcome this problem, BEXCO’s R&D team has designed an innovative torque matched rope. In contrast with other already existing ropes, which only provide torque matching at a defined tension in the mooring leg, this newly developed rope matches torque over a wide range of tensions going from 0% to over 50% of its MBL.
To prove the performance of this advanced rope BEXCO recently performed a full scale torque matched test at Holloway in Houston. In this test a mooring leg, consisting of a 89mm 6X52 IWRC steel wire in combination with a 150mm polyester rope, was subjected to cyclic loading around different load levels ranging from 15% up to 55% of rope MBL. This test, witnessed by representatives of Intermoor, Noble Denton, ABS and Moorwest showed that rotation in the steel wire stayed well below 5° per lay length (as prescribed by ABS and ISO) over the complete tension range from 15%-55% of the ropes’ MBL. This means that this new rope not only avoids fatigue damage to steel wire at the service load of the mooring leg but also at loads occurring during storm conditions.

FULL OF FIBRE - BEXCO IN ISSUE 5 FROM THE EUROPEAN OIL & GAS MAGAZINE
June 23, 2008
Read our article in Issue 5 from the European Oil & Gas magazine:
BEXCO is a leading manufacturer and supplier of fibre ropes for marine and offshore applications including for FPSOs and mooring lines.
It was formed after a merger nearly a decade ago although the origins of its founding companies can be traced back to 1725.
“We’re a fibre rope manufacturer that has mainly been active in the maritime sector, as was the original Vermeire company that helped form BEXCO,” explains sales and marketing managing Guy Blondé. “The other company, Le Lis, was more of a manufacturing unit mainly active in offshore and partly within the maritime business. When the two companies came together in 1999 they formed BEXCO.”
