Unique functionalities include testing lengths of up to 25 metres, automating tests of one week or longer with remote electronic data interchange and offering on-site certification of made-to measure rope solutions
Bexco, one of the leading DeepRope®, SPM and maritime synthetic rope producers for the world’s largest offshore oil and gas mooring and lifting projects, has installed its industry-first test bench at its manufacturing facility in Flanders, Belgium.
The bench is equipped with 5 metre dual cylinders which allow for precise, digitized stress tests for both large diameter finished synthetic rope (500-tonne cylinder) and smaller diameter synthetic subrope (80 tonne cylinder). This versatile, made-to-measure unit is capable of testing the entire range of high quality, maritime, single point mooring, DeepRope® and special lifting products. This includes breaking strength, stiffness, splice integrity, fatigue, creep and torque-match testing.
Peter Van Den Berghe, Chief Operations Officer of Bexco comments: “This significant investment represents a commitment to our customers, as its unique design has been based on specific client needs. The unit is semi-automated for prolonged testing and is well beyond the usual 15 metre length to focus on both splice and rope body behaviour. It also means Bexco is now capable of offering proof-load testing and certification on site prior to delivery, significantly reducing project turnaround times and increasing efficiency in the overall process.”
One such request has come from a customer requiring a combined wire and polyester rope solution for a temporary mooring solution in an offshore drilling application. The new unit is capable of torque-match testing Bexco’s made-to-measure DeepRope® to ensure it has the same twist behaviour in operating conditions as its 6-strand steel equivalent.
Francis Mottrie, CEO of Bexco, adds: “Bexco is now taking the next step into its promising future, winning and delivering two of the world’s major offshore mooring projects in 2012-13, with strong growth in its Maritime and Single Point Mooring segments. Investing in our customers’ needs is the best way of demonstrating our ambitions to the market.”
The unit is already being used for internal product testing, and will be made available for external use as of the first quarter of 2014.
